World Mental Health Day: October 10, 2022
World Mental Health Day has been declared by the World Health Organization as an annually recognized day to raise awareness about and support mental health around the world. This year the focus is on "Making Mental Health and well-being for all a global priority."
On October 10, the YMCA will observe World Mental Health Day by acknowledging the impact of social injustice on mental health. Specifically, the violence and injustice of poverty, racism, sexism, homo- and transphobia, ableism, and other forms of discrimination have harmful effects on mental health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, communities that were already poorly resourced were more profoundly affected. Pre-existing injustices were compounded by the stress of job loss, sickness, social isolation, and the loss of loved ones.
The United Nations has identified the following communities as at risk of mental health distress: frontline health workers who face the unrelenting toll of the pandemic; older adults and people with pre-existing conditions who are most at risk of life-threatening complications from COVID; children and youth affected by isolation; women who have experienced increased violence in the home; and people in conflict settings.
The Y plays a significant role in caring for the mental health of our staff, volunteers, and community members. Access to quality mental health resources for all is essential for a healthy, vibrant, and inclusive community.
