For many, the Y is much more than a gym or a place to swim—it’s a hub of connection, support, and belonging. For generations, the Y has been where individuals come to improve their health, learn new skills, and build lasting relationships. But what truly sets the Y apart is its remarkable ability to create a sense of community that impacts lives far beyond its walls.
Meet Sylvia - a devoted member and volunteer who will celebrate her 24th anniversary with the Y on January 17. Sylvia joined the Y shortly after returning to St. Thomas in 2001, feeling disconnected from the life she had left behind in Toronto as well as her new life in St. Thomas, her hometown, as it had changed so much while she was away. However, what began as a way to stay active quickly blossomed into a lifeline.
Over the years, Sylvia has volunteered her time to organize events, assists with volunteer coordination, and even stepped in to support front desk operations during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Y isn’t just a gym,” she says. “It’s where I found my community.”
The Y community stands as a beacon of support during life’s challenges as members support each other through life’s ups and downs. For Sylvia, this support was especially poignant after the loss of her husband. Members and staff rallied around her, offering help, comfort, and encouragement.
“It takes a village,” Sylvia reflects, “and the Y is my village. I’ve never felt so supported in my life.” She recalls how fellow members offered rides when she was unable to drive, helped set up her equipment in fitness classes after an injury, and simply showed up for her during tough times.
Sylvia also credits the Y for helping her manage her type 2 diabetes without medication for over 20 years. Now 81, she remains an active participant in fitness classes, attending four to five times a week. “My doctor told me the best medicine is getting to the Y and exercising,” she shares.
For Sylvia and others, the Y is more than a place to work out—it’s a home away from home, a support system, and a lifelong network of friends.
