Exciting Expansion at Stoney Creek YMCA

People celebrating around a cake

YMCA of Southwestern Ontario proudly announces the near completion of the highly anticipated expansion of the Stoney Creek Community Centre, YMCA & Library (920 Sunningdale Road East, London, ON). This project, which officially began construction nearly a year ago, culminated in a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 22, 2024.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of community partners and vital funding, this expansion is a key component of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), with support from both the Federal and Provincial Governments and the City of London. As Cheryl Smith, Deputy City Manager of the City of London, stated, “The Stoney Creek Community Centre, YMCA, and Library, from its inception, and now in its expanded version, exemplifies the importance of partnerships in driving positive community outcomes.”

The expansion includes a 7,900 square foot addition featuring modern structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. Key highlights are:

  • A 7,900 square foot addition to the second floor, equipped with updated structural, mechanical, and electrical systems tied into the existing facility
  • New multi-purpose spaces designed to meet the highest standards of accessibility, enabling all members of the community, regardless of age or ability, to participate fully
  • Over 300 new spaces for school year and summer day camps annually
  • Dedicated community space for local groups to run social and recreational programs, improving access for all ages, from children to seniors
  • Enhanced energy efficiency with the installation of LED lighting throughout the facility
  • A newly expanded child minding room where parents and guardians can drop off their children to be cared for by trained YMCA staff while they participate in recreational activities. The space will include stroller parking and cubbies to store children’s belongings.
  • New rental space for businesses and cultural events

This expansion is expected to welcome an additional 2,000-3,000 members, allowing the Y to broaden its health and fitness offerings, including more fitness spaces and diverse classes.

Andrew Lockie, CEO of YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, commented on the significance of the project, "This expansion is a testament to the power of collaboration between federal, provincial, and municipal partners, along with the generosity of our community and business supporters. Together, we are creating a welcoming and accessible space where every person, regardless of barriers, can thrive. We are excited to continue serving our community in new and meaningful ways."

With these improvements, Stoney Creek YMCA is poised to become a vital hub for wellness and community engagement in Southwestern Ontario.
