Sarnia, ON - A group of dedicated youth from YMCA’s YMAP SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) Program took centre stage at this year’s CANstruction event at Lambton Mall, in collaboration with The Inn of the Good Shepherd. Competing alongside several local organizations, these young leaders managed every aspect of their build—from planning and sourcing materials to execution—ultimately earning the Junior Outstanding Structure award.
For many of these youth, the experience was more than just an engineering challenge; it was an opportunity to build confidence, leadership skills, and friendships.
"I love it," said Catalina, who has been part of the Y for over a year and a half. "The Y is my safe place. I love the activities they organize and everything they do. Being part of this project made me feel included and supported."
The YMAP SWIS Program provides a welcoming space for newcomer youth, offering mentorship, leadership opportunities, and hands-on experiences that help them navigate life in Canada. Through workshops, recreational activities, and volunteer opportunities, YMAP helps young newcomers develop leadership skills, build friendships, and gain confidence in their new environment. Participants emphasized the personal growth they’ve achieved through the program.
"I feel like it's a healthy way of learning how to work in a team," said Camila. "Sometimes we don’t have the same opinions, but we learn how to communicate and compromise. This project also made me feel more connected with my friends and the community."
Bianca and Paula, two high school students who participated in CANstruction, shared how the Y has supported their personal and academic growth. "We share moments, we share knowledge, and we learn from each other," Bianca said. "The Y is a space where we can express ourselves and feel comfortable." Paula added, "It’s great because we can share our emotions and build friendships with other newcomers. It really helps us feel more connected."
Narcisse, a returning CANstruction participant, reflected on how the event has helped her develop resilience and time management. "This year felt different [than last year]. We had more time to prepare, but it was still stressful," she shared. Looking ahead, Narcisse is preparing for her next big challenge: attending Western University for medical sciences. "The Y has played a big role in my journey, and I’m grateful for all the experiences it has given me."
Beyond the excitement of the competition, the CANstruction event showcased the power of youth leadership and the impact of programs like YMAP SWIS. Through teamwork, creativity, and perseverance, these young changemakers are shaping a future where they not only belong but thrive.
