It’s incredible how life works - how, even when we feel like nothing good is happening, luck, God, energy, or whatever we choose to believe in is preparing us for something better. That’s my story with YMCA of Southwestern Ontario.
When I got my part-time job in October 2023, while I was in my third semester of Business Marketing at St. Clair College, I was beyond excited. The hiring process was quick - just one interview and an immediate “yes.” At that moment, it meant stability and the chance to gain work experience in Canada while studying.
However, when I graduated in May 2024, I thought I needed to leave my job right away. I believed that with my diploma in hand, I’d land a job in my field almost instantly. My goal was clear: to secure a role in Marketing. In my mind, coming to a country like Canada meant job opportunities would be within reach.
But reality was different. The job market wasn’t the same as a few years ago, and despite my efforts, months went by without achieving my goal. My morale started to drop, and every shift at work felt like a reminder that I hadn’t yet reached what I had worked so hard for. I felt frustrated, like I didn’t belong there, and that all my effort wasn’t paying off.
Over time, I realized that this job wasn’t an obstacle - it was a transition point in my life. I learned to appreciate it, to be grateful for it, and to enjoy the company of my coworkers, who reminded me that we’re all fighting our own battles.
It was at that very job that I met Kristie, a YMCA Employment Services Case Worker. I still remember the day she walked in as a customer. Her energy, kindness, and willingness to help made me feel like she was someone who could truly guide me. And it wasn’t just a thought - it was something I felt deep in my heart.
After telling her about my situation, we scheduled a meeting the very next day at the Y office in Windsor. From the very first moment, Kristie, a Y Employment Caseworker, offered me her unconditional support.
Kristie helped me refine my profile, gave me access to YMCA’s job search resources, and - most importantly - never let go of my hand. She constantly checked in on me, sent me recommendations, and made sure I had everything I needed. Thanks to her guidance and our teamwork, after months of effort, I finally secured a role in my field as a Marketing Coordinator.
Today, as I approach my first month in this new job, I can only express my deepest gratitude to YMCA of Southwestern Ontario and Kristie. Even after I got hired, she continued to support me, proving that her help was genuine and selfless.
If you’re reading this and are currently job hunting, I want to tell you: don’t give up. Even though the process may feel endless and exhausting, every step is part of the journey. Be patient, trust the process, and surround yourself with the right people. For me, that encounter with Kristie changed everything, and working with the Y was the key to reaching my goal.
Thank you, YMCA, for the amazing people on your team and for making it possible for so many of us to find our way to new opportunities. - Indira, Y Employment Services Client.
