English Language Classes

ESL CLASSES

Improving your English is the important step to success in your new country. The YMCA offers English as a Second Language (ESL) and Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programs for newcomers to Canada whose first language (or mother tongue) is not English.

The goal is to improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help with study, work and daily life goals.

Classes are offered year round and you can join at any time.  We serve learners of all levels – from those with little or no formal education to those with post-secondary degrees.

We have classes for literacy, beginner, intermediate and advanced English learners.  Students have the  opportunity to improve their Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Grammar and Pronunciation skills in our classes.  Instruction is based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks.  For more information on the Canadian Language Benchmarks click here: www.language.ca

Class times:

Monday to Friday 9:30am  to 3:00am

Monday to Friday 9:30am to 12:00pm

Monday to Friday 12:30pm to 3:00pm

Tuesday and Thursday 6pm to 9pm

  • Participating in and achieving a minimum of Benchmark 4 in Listening and Speaking meets the language requirement for Canadian Citizenship.  Certificates from our programs are recognized by Immigrants Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Our classes are free for the following classes of Newcomers that are 18 years of age or older:

  • Landed Immigrants
