Award Descriptions

Are you, or do you know, a local youth who demonstrates excellence in one of the following award categories?

Apprenticeship Award   
Sponsor: Sarnia-Lambton Workforce Development Board

The winner will be recognized for demonstrated proficiency in any apprenticeship area of skilled trades education, along with a dedicated commitment to pursue trades participation beyond secondary school.  The selection committee will look for related successes in both school and co-op placements, along with an ability to work well with others while showing genuine regard for the broader community.

Arts and Culture Award                    
Sponsor:  Ray Curran

The award winner will be recognized for his/her contribution to one or more areas of expression, development, or, preservation of visual, literary, and performing arts, which include drama, music and other visual or performing arts.  Beyond his/her contribution in the aforementioned arts, the following should be considered:  a contribution to an area or areas of expression, development, or preservation of the arts; an assessment of personal growth in the area of Arts and Culture; documented recognition for one’s contributions; and personal initiatives taken to encourage appreciation of all aspects of the arts by members of the wider community.  Candidates are encouraged to bring a portfolio of their work to the interview which judges may review.

Bellavance Family Award
Sponsor:  Richard and Becky Bellavance

This award has been created to recognize a candidate who has experienced significant mental health issues and has, or is currently receiving professional treatment and support.  In the personal essay portion of the application, the candidate for this award should discuss the challenges he/she has faced, and how their plans to overcome them. The candidate should articulate his/her commitment to volunteer work and service to others, and point out challenges that have been overcome. The successful candidate will be a student pursuing post-secondary education who has given back to their community. 

Business Innovation Award               
Sponsor:  Sarnia-Lambton Business Development Corporation

The winner will be recognized for a combination of business related skills, organizational ability, creative marketing ideas, and an entrepreneurial spirit, along with demonstrated  initiative and energy in giving back to the community.  Ideally, the winning candidate will present concrete examples of having attempted the development of a small enterprise (e.g. Junior Achievement venture), in part through engaging and motivating others to be supportive in practical ways.

Creativity Award             
Sponsor:  CinéSarnia

This award celebrates youth who, prompted by their interests, talents and passions have worked to help others in their community in a creative way.  The award recognizes the creation and development of an idea or project in any area such as music, athletics, art, design, business, education or science that has been created in an attempt to benefit others. The successful candidate should highlight examples of initiatives he/she has taken in the school or community.  He/she should also show evidence of an original body of work, individual or collaborative. 

Elaine McMurray Memorial Award 
Sponsor: Jim McMurray

This award has been created to recognize a candidate who volunteers in the community, practices the Y values of caring, honesty, respect, responsiblity and inclusiveness; takes initiative in the service of others and mentoring of others, and who has successfully addressed personal challenges. In the personal essay portion of the application, the candidate should articulate his/her commitment to details of volunteer work and service to others, and point out challenges that have been overcome. The successful candidate will be an outstanding student pursuing post-secondary education who may require financial assistance.

Excellence in Leadership Award                   
Sponsor: Sarnia-Lambton Federal Liberal Association

This award is provided to recognize active leadership through service to others within the school or broader community.  Ideally, the successful candidate will have put others before self, mentored others toward leadership roles, and demonstrated the skills of careful planning, sensitive listening, and the ability to write and speak well within the leadership role.

International Ambassador Award           
Sponsor: Sarnia Rotary Club

This award has been established to recognize a candidate who has shown an interest in international humanitarian service.  The successful candidate should expresses himself/herself well on behalf of Canada, should have an interest in travel and governmental affairs at both the international and the civic levels, and, should be a good role model for others to follow.  He/she will also be noted for fostering goodwill at home and abroad.

K. Eileen Wilson Award
Sponsor: Kirk Wilson

The winner of this award will be a candidate who has given back to community by supporting younger youth with special needs or youth who need extra help and encouragement, through efforts such as coaching, teaching, mentoring, or peer tutoring in the school or in the community.  As well, the successful candidate may have given personal time and energy to such activities as food banks, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers or Sisters, or in other charitable organizations that help those in need to find strength, confidence and independence.  In the written essay portion of the application form, the candidate should emphasize the ways that he/she has dedicated her/his talents to the more vulnerable, or those with special needs, and is someone who has set a clear example to others of the role compassion can play in a healthy society.

Jim McMurray Award          
Sponsor:  Jim McMurray

This award has been created to recognize a candidate who volunteers willingly in the community to foster goodwill, who takes initiative in the service of others and mentoring of others, and who has successfully addressed personal challenges in his/her life. In the personal essay portion of the application, the candidate for this award should articulate his/her commitment to details of his/her volunteer work and service to others, and point out challenges that have been overcome. The successful candidate will be an outstanding student pursuing post-secondary education who may require financial assistance.  

Personal Achievement Award       
Sponsor:  CIBC

This award has been established to recognize a candidate who has met, and overcome, personal challenges or obstacles in his/her life such as physical disabilities or difficult family circumstances. In the personal essay portion of the application, the candidate for this award should demonstrate, and should show evidence of how her/she have remained courageous, and determined in the face of adversity, and is facing the future with optimism.

Philanthropy Award 
Sponsor: Steeves & Rozema

This award has been created to recognize  candidate who has identified a specific need, or shortcoming, in his/her school or community, and have responded to this need by working individually or by collaborating with others, to gather together the necessary resources (financial, human, political, etc.) in order to successfully address this particular shortcoming.  In the personal essay portion of the application, the candidate for this award should indicate what particular need was addressed, what resources were pulled together, and what improvements to the life of the school, or community, resulted from his/her efforts.

Social Justice Award 
Sponsor: Social Services Network of Sarnia-Lambton

The recipient of this award will be an individual who has made a positive impact in their community through their advocacy and celebration of LGBT rights. The successful candidate will have given significant time and energy to this issue, have personally faced adversity and overcome their own struggles with courage and perseverance, or he/she may be someone who is identified as an ally to the LGBT community. The nominee will demonstrate a passion for helping those in need, a vision of equality for all, and a dedication to building a stronger, better community.  In the personal essay portion of the application, the candidate should express their stance on LGBT rights, the advocacy and charitable work they have been involved with as it relates to this issue, their motivation for doing so and what resulted from his/her efforts.

St. Clair Auto Award
Sponsor:  Richard and Becky Bellavance

This award has been established to recognize students who are determined to persue an education in order to improve life for themselves and their family.  Applicants should possess strong family values and have successfully addressed challenges in their lives.  Applicants demonstrating an interest in Auto Mechanics, or other trades will receive special consideration.  In the personal essay portion of the application, candidates should articulate their family values, challenges addressed, occupational interests, and also show how they incorporate YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility into their lives.

Thelma McMurray Memorial Award
Sponsor:  Jim McMurray

This award has been created to recognize a candidate who has demonstrated determination to make a better life for himself/herself, by diligently applying himself/herself to academic achievement, while overcoming obstacles in his/her life. Special consideration will be given to the candidate who also has taken leadership initiatives in his/her school or community, and who has shared his/her talents with others. In the personal essay portion of the application, the candidate for this award should discuss the challenges he/she has faced, outline the talents he/she has shared, and list any leadership initiatives.  The successful candidate will be an outstanding student who is pursuing post-secondary education and who may need financial assistance.

Volunteerism and Community Service Award (2 Awards)

This award has been created to recognize an individual who goes above and beyond, and, who exemplifies the true potential of a volunteer to make a difference in his/her community.  The nominee will have shown a commitment to bettering his/her community by volunteering his/her time to a cause about which he/she is passionate.  In addition, the nominee will demonstrate creativity, co-operation, and, serve as a role model for others in his/her community.  Examples of practical successes in organizing the energies of others in constructive activities and programs, to build a stronger community, will be important factors in this category.

YMCA Youth Leadership Award
Sponsor:  YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario 

The recipient of this award will be YMCA employee or volunteer, or a family member of a YMCA employee or volunteer.  The recipient must demonstrate YMCA core values:  caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and inclusiveness.  The recipient must also have a strong commitment to volunteerism, as well as an appreciation for the impact that the YMCA has had on them and on others.
